PATIENT SIXTY-SEVEN RELEASES NEW SINGLE - "A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NONE"
Screamed verses. Sung Choruses. Repeated piano melodies. A dreamy, atmospheric part in the middle. As a critic, I hear a lot of this. These are tropes used again and again in modern Metalcore and for good reason: they create dynamism, emotion, a sense of vastness. Conversely, it can be tough to stand out within these guidelines. Let's be honest: a trope only becomes so by being somewhat derivative.
"A Stitch In Time Saves None", the recent offering from Australia's Patient Sixty-Seven does stand out, however, and here's why: Firstly, and perhaps most noticeably, the singer/screamer is very talented, and the overlapping, disparate vocals in the verses are performed impeccably and create a sinister quality that I greatly admire. The choruses ground the song and offer variation, and the musicians and production are all clearly a cut above in terms of talent and arrangement. Personally, I like being left with a somewhat dark feeling at the end of a piece (you know, like the first time you saw the movie Se7en), and this band gets top marks in that regard.
So how do you stand apart in today's modern Metalcore scene? Talent and loads of practice, of course. But most of all? Execution, folks. Flawless execution.
