TEAM22 RELEASES NEW SINGLE - "STRAIGHT TO THE X"
Pop Punk/Skatepunk band Team22 are after my old, black heart, and I’ll tell you why.
Firstly, they play happy, fun, galloping punk and appear to be truly enjoying themselves. Second, their singer has one of those hard-to-place but unmistakably non-American accents that immediately reminds me of Millencolin, and I’ve always loved them, ever since I saw Steve Caballero sit in on bass at Warped Tour circa 1998. (Jesus wept, I’m getting really oooold.)
And lastly, they sing about real topics like the struggles of alcoholism and getting sober which is something that I, after 48 years, have finally accomplished.
But they do it in a hopeful way, not in the sad-sack, self-loathing style of many bands. The key is to not take yourself too seriously, but when a situation dictates, to take it seriously enough.
“Straight to the X” is a fast, funny and wildly enjoyable tune that still has the self-awareness to tackle a serious problem in a positive way, and for that, these boys have my admiration, wherever they may be from.
