MTVKID RELEASES NEW SINGLE - "YEAH YEAH"
Duality in music is a subject that comes up a lot in my reviews. It's fascinating how inherently musically upbeat genres like Pop Punk and Ska can contain some profound, vulnerable and often downright sad themes and lyrics. This dynamic can then, in turn, create some really interesting songs and evoke a variety of emotions in the listener.
Enter "Yeah Yeah", the latest single from mtvkid off their upcoming EP Far From It. The melody and musical performances are quality pop punk, almost saccharine in their bouncy delivery, but the lyrics hint at an approaching mental breakdown that would make Holden Caulfield proud. The song is catchy and well arranged, but it carries an air of desperation that can be felt almost subconsciously, even if the listener isn't totally paying attention. The whole "I'm fine, everything's fine" act, when everything is, in fact, far from it, is illustrated deftly here, and I find that to be an impressive achievement.
