DORIAN CREECH IS DEAD RELEASES NEW SINGLE - "DEAR LITA CHANTLER, I'M SORRY"
Well hell. What is a beginner music critic to do when reviewing the work of a friend and peer? And what’s more, what to do when this friend has consistently put out really lovely songs for what seems like forever? The answer? I reckon it’s to listen closely and disassociate any and all personal feelings, right? Ok, here goes:
Although bands like Lagwagon, Eve 6 and Descendents don’t often get lumped together, for the purposes of this review, it fits. Just bear with me. Each has a unique talent for writing mid-tempo punk/pop punk songs that can feel equal parts uplifting and yet melancholy. Hopeful and yet pessimistic. They write other types of songs too, but when they release one of these, it tends to stick with you, you tend to reference it emotionally long after you’ve heard it. Well, “Dear Lita Chantler, I’m Sorry”, the new single by Dorian Creech Is Dead has the same effect. It’s not an aggressive punk rock attack, it’s heartfelt and beautifully written. But it maintains the same memorable, almost positive arrangement and hook and leaves the listener with a sense of loss and sadness but simultaneously resolute in the thought that tomorrow will be brighter. That’s a tough dynamic to pull off, and when done correctly, it demands the utmost respect for the songwriter and musicians that make it a reality.
Picture the ending of the old Hulk TV show: Banner walks on down the road every time, clearly sad to leave the people he’s helped and the relationships he’s formed behind, but also hopeful and determined to inevitably forge new bonds and help new characters in the next episode. In that regard, I can’t wait to see what’s next for Dorian Creech Is Dead, and I’ll patiently stay tuned for the next installment. Que “The Lonely Man” as I walk off, ready to meet my next assignment, but sorry to leave this one behind…
