The latest single from Ohio emo-pop group Cotter is an archetypal angsty young love story. Maybe you, like many of us, used to think unrequited love songs were exclusive to old folk music; yet here’s modern alt pop breaking the mold. “All In My Mind,” is just as doleful as Lead Belly and Bill Monroe’s renditions of “In The Pines” (or Nirvana’s “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” for that matter), but written for a contemporary audience, with lyrical language and stylistic elements relevant to today’s music.
In this release, plucky guitar leads, driving bass, and danceable drums coalesce into radio emo bread and butter. Add the band's quirky call and response vocals and you’ll be singing along in no time, just like with any good folk ballad.
We added this track to our Underground Punk playlist on Spotify. Commiserate with “All In My Mind” below and then follow Cotter for more band updates.
