“Special” is the newest release from pop artist Charlotte Sands, and we are delightfully surprised by it. For an artist whose focal sound up to this point has hovered near mainstream style pop, the chorus of “Special” is a clear and well-executed pop punk anthem. The tradeoff between stripped down plucky electric guitar, backed by a tinny drum machine in the verses, and full on pure 2000s pop punk glory in the chorus is perfectly accomplished.
If the trajectory of electronic pop and pop punk music is to flawlessly meld into a new singalong double pop punk genre, we are intrigued by and expectantly anticipating it. We can totally hear this playing on the local radio station as friends shout out the lyrics while riding to a party or to see Charlotte Sands in concert.
