“Eventually” the new post-punk track from Toronto based group The Effens, is soothing to both the eardrums and the soul. It features superb melodic vocals over hooky little guitar lines, dark bass, and snappy drumming. The chord structure is a bit different from your run-of-the-mill indie pop rock, and the fuzzy ring mod effects in the instrumental sections give the track a zesty edge. It straddles the line between laid back, easy pop listening and more aggressive alt genres.
We are pleasantly reminded of classic English new wave groups, like The Cure and Modern English, but replace the synths with augmented guitar and fortitude. The Effens sound more like they could beat us up in a bar fight, though the thematic material of this track, which talks about turning the other cheek to one’s enemies, suggests that they wouldn’t. Still, we’ll do our best to stay on their good side.
