“I’m Waiting On You” is the latest single from Fuckin Whatever, a supergroup featuring members from Circa Survive, Taking Back Sunday, and Grouplove. From the outset, we get nostalgic flashbacks to high school chorus and 2000s indie folk pop due to the underlying loop of tightly synced “oohs,” reminiscent of an elite high school choir and/or college a cappella group à la Boyz II Men, offbeat peppy vocal interjections similar to The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey,” hand claps, and minimalist auxiliary percussion akin to kitchen utensils tapping on glassware crossed with Pitch Perfect’s “When I’m Gone” (often referred to as “The Cup Song”).
Over this comforting soundscape, a relaxed lead vocal asserts a theme that some might interpret as depressing, but in this context seems more liberating. Overall, the track is indie pop magic that pleasantly reminds us of The Lion King soundtrack, but as a pared down indie experimental studio project.
The track is the last release from the group’s self-titled EP. The full project is cohesive in its sound with choir-inspired backing vocals and a gallery of various auxiliary percussion instruments throughout. It’s an artistic summer release worth a close listen.
