SALT MIRROR RELEASES NEW SINGLE - "CASTAWAY"

Ethereal. Undulating. Angular. Any writer worth their salt will admit that $10 descriptors are important, so I just went ahead and gave you some of my all-time go-to's right off the jump.

And they all apply when discussing the new offering by Post Hardcore/Metal band Salt Mirror, appropriately titled "Castaway". I say "appropriately" because the song seems to drift (seemingly) aimlessly, until the listener begins to realize that there's a very specific port in mind all along, and I love that kind of musical epiphany. Method in madness, some would say.

As for my $20 words? I say "ethereal" because this song shares a lot of qualities with later Deftones in that it's sufficiently heavy and hard, but with an exceptional artistic freedom about it. It undulates and pulses much like the sea, and much like the sea, it takes you on a journey. The vocals are raw and desperate in a way that evokes classic Fugazi, and complements the angular, sometimes almost jarring movements of the instrumentation. It's angular in that it's full of starts and stops and stages that shouldn't be cohesive, but are, in fact, well planned and threaded together deftly.

In short, it's a very well-written song that threatens to be referred to as a "piece", and I say that without any pretention or pomp and circumstance. Ya know, like when you use the word 'artsy', but you truly mean it as a compliment.

We added the single to our Heavy Heavy Heavy playlist on Spotify.

Now stop reading and start listening.
