I don't operate under the pretense that my reviews are widely read, but if they are, one might notice consistent threads, themes that I go back to again and again. One of the biggest is the myriad reasons why I love music. And one of those reasons is one word: duality.
What do I mean by that? Well, I'm glad you asked. Songs are one of the few art forms in which inherently bad things can be transformed into good. Specifically, personal trauma can be made to sound universal. Profound heartbreak and loss can be manipulated to sound not only hopeful, but what's more, they can sound cool.
This point is beautifully exemplified by "Our Wedding/My Funeral" a delightfully honest and catchy number by the pop-punk group My Beautiful Mistake. Morose and melancholy? Yes, undoubtedly. Upbeat, happy and fun? Also, yes.
