There was a band on a few of the old Fat Wreck compilations called Bracket. They were never as flashy or as widely listened to as some of the others, but one thing was true: I loved Bracket. They had this understated, often overlooked power, their songs were big without sounding as if they tried to make them so-beautiful without giving a toss whether the listener thought they were or not.
"Natalie", the new single by Gone Stereo has a lot of the same qualities. It switches seamlessly from mid-tempo pop punk to galloping skate punk, to big, broad emotional choruses and is inherently listenable, but the poignancy of the tune could easily be missed, or worse, dismissed by the overly casual listener. It has a heart and soul that is understated in much the same way as Bracket, and there's something I love about that. The singer isn't trying to be Robert Plant or Robert Frost, but to convey real emotion and loss without pageantry is a somewhat lost art. And for that, they have my respect. Plus, the drummer is a beast.
We added the single to our Underground Punk playlist on Spotify.
Now stop reading and start listening.
