Updated: 9 minutes ago
Australia-based artist Jovi Skyler recently dropped their new album Unpopular. A 10-track ride that boasts a raw and anthemic energy, this album delivers elements of Punk, Garage Rock, and Grunge. The end result is a nostalgic yet refreshing sound that'll quickly pull you in and leave you ready for more. It's easy to stay engaged from start to finish on this album, and by the time it's over, you'll find yourself smashing the replay button so you can experience it again. This is an artist that every fan of the genre needs to keep on their radar. What a release!
Gritty instrumentals deliver that raw and emotional sound as poppy vocal flows add an inviting element. Solid songwriting, production work, and overall writing help tie the entire release together. Each track sets up the following song perfectly. The journey that listeners are handed in this album is pretty wild. It's so refreshing to come across a new release like this that can deliver a nostalgic and down-to-earth sound. We can't wait to see what they have planned next.
Classic punk sound is a major driving force in this release. Guitars are distorted, the drums are crashy, and the bass lines are groovy and root the instrumental together. The vocal performances on this release are powerful too. Unique transitions keep you engaged in each song, and the songwriting makes sure you continue onto the next. That's something that we don't see enough of with new releases. There are no skips on this album, and it all feels very intentional. Unpopular is a set of tracks that unleashes a journey, and it's a journey that any fan of the punk, grunge, alt-rock world is going to love.
This album makes me want to skateboard. I haven't been back on my board since an injury I got back in 2024. After writing this review and listening through the album a couple of times, I've been hit with the motivation I needed. After this is published, I'm hitting the skatepark! This album can serve as the perfect theme music for whatever you've been putting off that you've wanted to get back into.
You can take a listen to the new album in its entirety below. We also added a couple of our personal favorites to our Underground Punk and our Underground Indie & Alternative playlists on Spotify. If you like what you hear, make sure to follow Jovi Skyler so you can stay on top of their future releases. Enjoy!
