The Sunshine State’s “Dating A Drug Dealer” is the latest track penned by indie songwriter Skyler Stonestreet, also known as the author of top hits for major artists like Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, The Chainsmokers, and Marshmello.
Opening with a single wavery keyboard, the song is an instant magnet for indie pop lovers. The track continues with stripped down bass and drums as Stonestreet’s glassy vocals slide by, unfolding the story of a former romantic fling. Waves of warm delayed guitar crash gently over the subdued chorus, which reminds one of walking along a deserted beach, perhaps hand in hand with a companion.
Something about the track reminds us of the scene in The Parent Trap where Lindsey Lohan’s character (one of the two) is chauffeured through the streets of London to the tune of The La’s “There She Goes.” Except imagine there’s more time lapse cinematography happening and it’s on a warm Floridian or Californian beach instead of in bustling London. Both the scene and this track convey a warm, comforting atmosphere, where one feels completely in the moment and, for that time, without a care in the world.
